FBC Trip to Magee Marsh – May 11-15, 2019

Dear FBC Members,

Although it is only January, it is not too early to make hotel reservations for the FBC trip to Magee Marsh.

Hotels in Oregon OH are as close as one can be to Magee Marsh (short of being at Maumee SP Lodge and Resort).  Six members have made reservations at Comfort Inn East, 2930 Navarre Avenue, Oregon OH, check in on Saturday, May 11, check out on Wednesday, May 15. Cancel policy is 4pm the day of check in, so for any change in plans there will be no problem with a cancel.  This hotel has an early and a good breakfast; they are used to birders. Some of our members regularly stay at at this hotel when in the area.

The primary sites to be visited will be:

Magee Marsh including the Boardwalk (more than once), east beach, west beach.   Black Swamp Bird Observatory.    Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge including, hopefully the Blue Goose van trip to Cedar Creek NWR (restricted) and elsewhere, the driving tour on the refuge, trail behind Visitor Center.  Crane Creek Estuary.   Metzger Marsh Wildlife Area.  Maumee Bay State Park including the Boardwalk.  These are all within the 20-mile stretch of highway between Oregon and Magee Marsh.

A must during the trip will be a meal/desert at Blackberry Corners, 5975 N. Elliston Trowbridge Road, Martin, OH.  Again, within the 20-mile stretch, but a bit out of the way.

Other possible birding venues could be Catawba/Marblehead area near Sandusky or the nearest of the Toledo Metroparks. Each of these venues are a good hour away from Oregon.

Transportation can be:  Drive in one day (480 from Fredericksburg to Magee Marsh, another 20 to Oregon), drive in two-days, fly to nearby Toledo.

If you’re interested please respond to Joyce Bathke jmbathke@cox.net and myself at sally.knight60@gmail.com.
